Tjatur Kukuh
Social Architect

 

Tjatur Kukuh Surjanto is a social architect, founder of a number of NGOs, and founding Director of the Santiri Foundation. Born in Surabaya, but based in Lombok for almost 30 years, he has worked as an NGO activist, with his beginnings in urban-community housing development and media. More recently his work has focused on coastal and marine ecosystems, and alternative education. Tjatur has been involved in and initiated several professional societies, such as: Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) Architects Forum, consulting for AKPPI (Associate of Community Base Housing Development consultant), ASPEK (Associate of Community Housing Cooperation), and facilitating the establishment of  WALHI NTB. He supported Jaring Pela, a network on marine and coastal issues and, in 2007, together with others colleagues, established the 'Indonesia Facilitator Association'.He also is a member of 'Perguruan Rakyat Mahardika', a social activists' association focused on education issues. Together with PLSD (Participatory Local Social Development) Training Alumnae, he established the PLSD Indonesia Institute and remains a Board members. Tjatur is also a member of the Board of Experts of BPPI (Indonesia Heritage Society). He, more recently has been advisor for small grants, REDD+ and climate change, senior governance expert for SPARC-UNDP, 2010 - 2011. He is also responsible for the East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) needs assessment for climate change, particularly in institutional and governance strengthening, and for aspects of the Indonesia Climate Adaptation for Coastal Habitat (I-CATCH) program. In 2010, together with other colleagues, Tjatur initiated the formulation of the Common Platform of Sukma (Sunda Kecil and Maluku) people, in order to create social change in Indonesia. Sukma focuses on effective response to climate change impacts and addressing continental development bias. He is also involved in promoting the North Lombok District as a role model of implementation of the agenda of changes of Sukma at the district level. Tjatur can be reached at tjatur_ks@yahoo.com
