Emergency Relief for Flood Victims in Jakarta

The project supported approximately 663 households or 2,102 people in Eastern Jakarta. during the flood in 2007.

The relief work had touched the lives of the volunteers. For the repeat-volunteers, their applied learning facilitated smoother delivery of service. Values like respect for the local community organizations, teamwork, cooperation and community participation have proven effective in such endeavors.

The project provided a total of US$5,000 support to the 2007 flood victims in Jakarta , Bogor , Bekasi and Tangerang , Indonesia . These funds were channeled to community-based organizations: Perkumpulan Anak Aka, Fauna and Flora Indonesia, and local volunteers in Bekasi and South Bogor .

Perkumpulan Anak Akar provided emergency food and shelter, public health services with focus on awareness and training for mother and child better nutrition among 663 households or 2102 people in Eastern Jakarta . Inspired by the spirit of cooperation in the community, they organized the clean up activities after the flood. They also provided school bags and organized activities for the children.

Flora and Fauna Indonesia, together with Jakarta Green Monster or (JGM), a citizen volunteer network, worked on waste management and environmental concerns in the Muara Angke Wetland Areas. They trained the community on waste management and sanitation and environmental protection to restore good hygiene, health and environmental conditions. They re-established post-flooding household waste separation and composting and assisted in marketing the household compost.

Local resident volunteers, Ms. Eva Clough and Ms Elly Sheffer led other 20 community members in providing food, medicine, and medical services to flood victims in Babakan Madang in Bogor . They also organized games to cheer up the children victims and gave tables and chairs to “Pasir Angsana 3” Primary school in Ciapus.

Support for this project came from the American Jewish World Service (AJWS).
